In Loving Memory
Our Representative of "The Greatest Generation,” Paul Borel, one of our early MGA members, died on July 7th at the age of 95. Remember the short burst of news about the uniqueness of the 07/07/07 date? Paul’s moving on will further implant memories of that date in our minds.
Many MGA members will remember playing in the Paul Borel challenge scheduled for Paul’s 90th birthday on March 15, 2002 (it had to be postponed a week due to inclement weather). Paul beat the field of 35 MGA member golfers with his net 67. Paul loved the hours spent with friends golfing and capped off his years of golfing here at Longleaf with a hole in one on the 8th hole in 2005 at the age of 94.
Paul was a member of “The Greatest Generation,” and the life he lived and the contributions he made to our country and the communities in which he lived truly represent the attributes that helped make our country great. If you have read Tom Brokaw’s book about that era of American life, then you know what I mean about Paul’s life and contributions and attitude having that special “something” towards which we all might strive. His presence will be sorely missed by many MGA members.
The MGA has made a memorial contribution in Paul’s name to the First Tee Program of the Sandhills. The love of golf and the core values that the First Tee Program introduces to the young people in our community are the same love of golf and core values that represent many of the attributes that so well describe the Paul Borel that many of us knew and loved.
(Jim Walker was Dad's good friend and neighbor. He was with Dad and my mother Miriam at their home when Dad died. He spoke at Dad's memorial service. Jim and his wife Jean continue to be faithful, supportive friends to Mom, as do so many others in the caring Longleaf community. JJB)
