poem Collection #1: Fragments of rhyme and reason
Part 1: family affairs
The Roofs of Neuchâtel
Thereunder lived and died through centuries past Those of my blood who came before: Teachers, farmers, makers of clock and watch, Machinists, lawyers, cantonal functionaries, The bourgeosie of this once princely realm; What would they say if they but spoke today? 1982 |
Miriam
Three score ten years she stands from day of birth This child of Chesham-Williams union wrought. Who through her splendid days upon the earth The gift of love and service to us brought. So prompt to help wherever help is needed She without quarrel will walk the extra mile. No neighbor's cry has ever gone unheeded; With all she shares an ever winsome smile. Her spirit shines in utter radiancy In role as tender mother, gracious wife. Along the way I hear her song as she Plants flowers in the garden of my life. Who knows of goodness sent from heaven above; Of beauty knows who has not known my love? 1985 |
Nancy
Wisdom comes with time they say Kindness through a tear Beauty from an inner glow Stays the chill of fear These and other things you know Living year by year. 1976 |
Elaine
Come stroll along the sunny way You'll meet her there today Who shares the ever ready smile With all that walk life's mile. If love the chain of virtues be Her links shine bright And bring a light That helps the world to see. 1976 |
Julie
What then, dark eyes, is left for you to do That you have not yet done or tried before? Have you the earth not seen from parachute, Tugged silken cord to break the long freefall Then lain so fractured vertebrae might knit? In scuba gear you scouted ocean's floor You've trekked the miles from Greece to Hebrides Broke then in agony the magic tape Which marks the end of cruel marathon. Now are the woes of others your concern That with you pleading stand before the bar Seek for their lives the peace of evening star. 1985 |
Jane's Twin Blessings
Twin blessings, gift from above One the image of the other Twice as much for us to love But twice the work for mother. Tracy and Kelly together Plus siblings Katie and Sean We hope but cannot know whether They all will sleep until dawn. Mealtime for twins is eleven They don't eat out of a jar Daddy can't help so thank heaven Mamas are built as they are. To us they're more precious than gold For no matter how much we give With smile they return manifold Blessing to lives that we live. 1981 |
Doug
Sifting through the sands of time Found a special blessing Came the surge of joy sublime On my mind impressing The birthday of my son And life's meaning are as one. 1977 |
Mark
Virginia hills he chose as his domain Wherein he found a school and lovely bride Then master-builder's art strove to obtain That he in improved land might share with pride. The Peaks of Otter look upon the day Ere sunlight comes he is about the work Of readying tasks for others in his pay That each may do his bit and none shall shirk. Day's end brings play on tennis court as he Hits dusted baselines with his passing shots And evening often brings clients-to-be With plans of what to put on various lots. Not greed nor sloth shall stay him from the quest Of giving clients aught but is his best. 1985 |
Birth
Gift of life from heaven sent Target of our love to be Nature's pure ennoblement Making us a family. 1979 |
Baptismal Wish
Little girl with the big smile With us since so short a while, We who love you pray today: Be you blessed in every way May long life and health abide And the Lord walk by your side Grow in wisdom and in grace There is none can take your place Give us now another smile Stay with us a long, long while. 1977 |
The Promise
I take thee for my own this day Are words to feel not just to say Twice blessed are two now one who find Their joy is of a higher kind When giving has the upper hand And frankness makes a constant stand. Should bitter cup to lip be pressed Or trouble stay you from your quest Reach out to dry the other's tear Thus make your joint sun reappear Then shall the tender moments bring The feast of life so promising. 1977 |
Man & Wife
Sand's slip through the glass of time In life's rhythmic pantomime Love's full measure to bestrow Making life's rich garden grow. 1976 * * * * * * Exchange of rings betokens love Which too can endless be If blessed by Him who is above And watches over thee. Let hands be joined and time stand still While we this wish commend: Long life, good days and hearts which will Know love that has no end. 1976 * * * * * * May the best that is in each Each the other fully give. May their striving beyond reach Make their true love ever live. 1974 * * * * * * May the years ahead be bright Let the age-old promise shine As you day to day recite: "I am yours and you are mine." 1976 * * * * * * Come then and place your hand in mine As up life's hill we climb, Sharing hours in days so bright And tender moments in the night. 1975 * * * * * * Blue-eyed youngster now is man Settled in his own domain Still our son a special place can Ever in our hearts retain. 1977 * * * * * * |
Christmas at Pinehurst
By velvet fairways longleaf pines stand guard Their scented needles waving as we pass Lights wink and blink along the boulevard Where busy shoppers Yuletide gifts amass. We who by birth and marriage ties are bound Have gathered here to reminisce and share The joys of life so old yet newly found Of health and happiness beyond compare. Think now of others those in greater need, And mindful of One wise men came to see The season's great commandment fully heed So live that we may share His legacy. The calming peace flows from the star of old Still healing all who would its light behold. 1984 |
Moving Day
Now we have a new abode New phone number (same old code) Make, dear friends, a note of these Come to see us when you please. 1975 |
